Identifying how each person wants to be shown appreciation is critical to be effective in encouraging and supporting one’s colleagues. Otherwise, team members wind up guessing or taking a shot in the dark, which can obviously lead to missing the mark.

Over 285,000 individuals across the world have taken the Motivating By Appreciation Inventory which has helped them identify their Primary, Secondary and Least Valued Languages of Appreciation, along with the specific actions they value most within their Primary Language of Appreciation and from whom they desire those actions.

The Expanded MBA Inventory builds off of the foundation of the Basic MBA Inventory while also providing deeper analysis and more specific insight. First, the respondent’s results are compared with over 200,000 others who have taken the inventory. To communicate the information clearly, the results are not only reported in numerical form but also illustrated through pie charts.

Secondly, to help colleagues and supervisors get to the heart of the matter quickly, we ask each employee to identify the one most important act of appreciation to them. So that, if someone only communicated appreciation to them in one way, they would be sure to “hit the mark.”

What You Want to Avoid

In our work with hundreds of thousands of employees, we’ve heard many people make informal comments about how they don’t want to be shown appreciation. While the primary focus of the MBA Inventory is to identify the ways colleagues prefer to be shown appreciation, we felt identifying the actions to avoid would be valuable information to include – so that well-meaning colleagues do not inadvertently make a mistake by using an undesired action and unintentionally create offense.

Why is it important to know what your colleagues don’t want you to do when trying to show them appreciation? For a number of reasons:

1. To help you avoid making a mistake and offending someone inadvertently.

2. So you don’t waste time, energy and money trying to show appreciation in ways that aren’t going to work.

3. To aid all team members in thinking through their actions and reminding them that not everyone likes the same actions they do.

Acts of Appreciation Specific to Various Work Settings

Working with a wide variety of companies, organizations and industries in teaching their team members how to communicate authentic appreciation, we discovered that it was helpful to customize some of the inventory questions and specific actions to make them practical and relevant. For example, an Act of Service may look very different in a medical setting, a public school, a general business workplace, or for remote employees. As a result, we’ve created a number of versions for different industries.

We are pleased to introduce a new version of the Expanded MBA Inventory we have just created for those who work in settings which serve our senior adults and elders. We know that the long-term care industry has faced extremely difficult circumstances over the past 18 months, which has taxed the capabilities and resilience of their workers. We wanted to show our support by developing the Senior Care Version of the inventory that specifically applies to those who work in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health care and hospices. The actions to choose from, and the terminology commonly used in these settings are utilized to make this version feel relevant and practical to care providers. Click here to see a sample report.

We are excited about the new, Expanded Version and have received rave reviews from those who have taken it. We believe that, with the new components added, the Expanded Version of the MBA Inventory is, by far, the most accurate and practical tool available in the marketplace for determining how to effectively communicate authentic appreciation within your organization.

NOTE: The code for taking the Basic version of the MBAI that comes with a 5 Languages of Appreciation book can be upgraded to take the Expanded Version. Codes for the Expanded Version can also be purchased separately for both individuals and groups. Give it a try!
